The slamming of her door was my tipping point.
I was mad. I was absolutely livid at the texts I’d seen on her phone. Daniel was still in the picture, obviously, and that shit didn’t sit well with me. He was the reason I lost her in the first place. I wouldn’t let him do this to us again.
I chased after her, grateful she hadn’t locked herself in the room. When I came in, I found her curled up on her bed, sobbing into her pillow.
“You’re not pushing me away this time,” I said, a bit harsher than I meant to.
“Just go away. All of this is pointless.”
“What do you mean all of this is pointless, Mel? All of this is for us.”
She turned and shot me a glare so powerful it made me take a step backward. “There is no us!” she shouted. “There is you and Raquel and then there’s me.”
Burying her face back in her pillow, she sobbed harder.
I exhaled hard, tipping my head back, praying for the strength to find the right words. I didn’t come over here to argue. Yes, it was my fault we were arguing right now because I flipped out over her phone, but I didn’t want to keep doing this.
Melody and I didn’t fight like this. Ever. Not until all of this got started. I wanted my best friend back. All of this bickering back and forth was making us both crazy.
I moved to the edge of the bed and sat down, covering my face with my hands. “Melody, please.”
“Go away!” she mumbled.
“No, I’m not leaving,” I argued back. “I’m not leaving you like last time. I’m fighting because yes, this is complicated as fuck. Yes, I’m still married. But you have my heart.”
She made no movement or indication that she heard what I was saying. Just kept sobbing into the pillow like I wasn’t even here. My hand found her ankle and I rubbed the skin there softly.
“I’m sorry for how I reacted just now. You have no idea...that guy.” I sighed. “He took you from me before and just knowing that he’s still around makes me feel unhinged. You know I’m not a violent person, but he makes me want to tear him limb from limb. I don’t like it. Please don’t go to brunch with him. I have no right to ask that of you because like you said, I’m married. I’m just begging you to please not go with him.”
Vulnerability was not my thing. I wasn’t some machismo driven type of guy, but I wasn’t overly emotional either. I certainly didn’t like admitting my weaknesses out loud. But I was beginning to learn that I couldn’t keep everything to myself. I didn’t have to wait for Melody to call out for full disclosure before I was deeply honest with her.
It was clear there was still some mistrust between us.
She didn’t believe I was serious about divorcing Raquel and I was worried she’d let Daniel get between us.
It was time for me to take the first step and break down all of the walls between us.
